WANTING A CHILD?
DESIRE FOR FAMILY AND CLINIC OF FILIATIONS

Place: IWK, Berggasse 17, 1090 Vienna

The desire for a cild is the origin of a misunderstanding that creates subjectivity in life. The question mark in the title, which is the title of PIPOL 10, the 6th European Congress of Psychoanalysis on the 3rd and 4th of July (by Video-Conference) scrutinizes this desire, this wish, that is at play in reproduction, which in our days has led to a decoupling of nature and culture via the possibilities of biotechnology. Dominique Holvoet writes in his argument for the congress: „Wanting a child, touches on the demand of obtaining a product from the marketplace, made available by the grace of science.“ He goes on: „The emphasis on the desire for family indicates that one never makes a child all alone; that his arrival necessarily inscribes him in the practice of lalangue where he falls. It is from this immersion in language that the parlêtre will retroactively question the place from where it came to be lodged in filiations.“ Biotechnology enables to realize our imaginations. We have entered an era in which fantasy becomes reality to the extent that reality itself has become fantasy. This changes our clinic in fundamental ways that we will only have to measure. Francois Anserment writes in his orientation text towards the PIPOL Congress about this new clinic: „A clinic that must be conceived without a priori. As a clinician, it is first of all a question of orienting oneself on the basis of what is revealed to us by those who embark on these practices. Those we receive teach us: those who take the new paths of procreation, those who act on their gender, bi-genders, fluid genders, a-genders, those who shake up the usual benchmarks of sexual and generational difference.“
