Argument

From symptom to sinthome

The distance between the symptom and the sinthome is the one existing between the subject of the unconscious and the parlêtre, the symptom considered as a formation of the unconscious and the symptom as a body event. The accent shifts in Lacan’s teaching from symbolic to the real, from the transferential unconscious to the real one. This shift imposes reconsidering the whole theory and the clinic, focusing on what is most specific in Lacan contribution to psychoanalysis. Interpretation, the analyst’s main intervention, is reduced to equivoque and jaculation. The analyst’s position and the session length are subordinated to these factors.

We will sketch in this seminar some aspects of the clinic of the real unconscious and of the symptom as a body event. Doing so will help us prove that with his late and latest teaching Lacan has left us some precious tools to face these times’ aversion to speech. In times when the symbolic order is declining, psychoanalysis doesn’t propose to restore the Name of the Father, but rather to become partners of each singular arrangement with jouissance the parlêtre tries to tide.
